It’s easy to forget that back in 1923 Christie was still a fledgling writer, and although she had enjoyed great success with her first two books, she still had the need to capture the imagination of editors and readers alike in the hope that they would continue publishing, and buying, her work. Mind you, the Turkish title translates as “Our Lesson is Murder” – and there aren’t any lessons in it. OK, the murder does take place adjacent to a golf course, but it doesn’t play that major a part in the story. I expect I was trying to work out how someone could commit a murder whilst balancing precariously on a pair of cufflinks – I’ve never been quite as intelligent as I ought to be. I’m not sure how old I was when I first read this book but I’m pretty sure that I didn’t know that the links in question was a golf course. If you haven’t read the book yet, don’t worry, I won’t spill the beans on whodunit! Poirot works with the local magistrate to discover precisely what happened whilst engaging in duels of wit with the local officer of the Sûreté. Paul Renauld in France, but by the time he and Hastings rush to his aid, he has been murdered. Why is the dead man wearing an overcoat that is too big for him? And who was the impassioned love-letter in the coat pocket for? Each felt deserving of the dead man's fortune. There's no lack of suspects: his wife, whose dagger served as the weapon, his embittered son, who would have killed for independence, and his mistress who refused to be ignored.

Apparently, it seems that Renauld and his wife were victims of a failed break-in, resulting in Renauld's kidnapping and death. Meanwhile the millionaire's wife is found bound and gagged in her room. Upon his arrival in Merlinville-sur-Mer, the investigator finds the man who penned the letter, the South American millionaire Monsieur Renauld, stabbed to death and his body flung into a freshly-dug, open grave on the golf course adjoining the property. Belgian detective Hercule Poirot is summoned to France after receiving a distressing letter with an urgent cry for help.
